Indianapolis IN Dentist Tells the History of Invisalign and Where It All Began

There have been millions of success stories with Invisalign, completely recreating the way that orthodontic treatment has improved a number of smiles. This simple and beneficial treatment allows patients to benefit from orthodontics without having to worry about the consequences like wires and brackets. But where did it start? Below, your Indianapolis IN dentist delves into the history of invisible braces and Invisalign to see how far we’ve come.

For a very long period of time, there was no option for patients to receive invisible braces—metal braces were the only option. Of course, it has progressed from headgear that needed to surround your entire head into the simple traditional braces that we’re all familiar with today, but there still come its issues and annoyances. Many patients, particularly teens, are uncomfortable with metal braces because it hurts their self-esteem and self-confidence.

One of the biggest issues with traditional metal braces is simply that they’re uncomfortable. So what’s the next step? How can professionals try and make brackets and wires more comfortable while also getting straighter teeth? In 1997, a young Stanford student named Zia Chishti was finishing his orthodontic treatment and his dentist gave him a plastic retainer after his metal braces were removed. Knowing how inconvenient traditional braces are for both children and adults, he wanted to develop a better way for patients of all ages to get straighter teeth.

Working with Kelsey Wirth, Apostolos Lerios and Brian Freyburger, Chishti and his partners founded Align Technology in 1997, where the journey towards Invisalign began! They wanted to create an orthodontic treatment that worked the same as metal braces without the hassle of wires and brackets and making it affordable for everyone.

For years and years, the founders did their best to promote and share Align Technology with the world. While the idea seemed great, many orthodontists were skeptic about it since they were simply students and not professionals. But the more they marketed it, tweaked it, and improved it, by 2004, more than 175,000 patients were using Invisalign (previously known as Align Technology). In between 2008 and 2012, there were over two million people who were benefitting from Invisalign and the number continues to grow!
