Don’t Let Bad Breath Hold You Back—Ask for Help from Your Indianapolis Family Dentists!
When you wake up, sometimes the first thing that you notice is your bad breath that accumulated overnight. This can certainly be a rude awakening, but it’s nothing that a quick brush of the teeth can’t fix, right? Or what about when you enjoy your favorite meal that happens to be swarmed with garlic? Pop a mint or a piece of gum after you’re finished and you should be fine! Unfortunately, this doesn’t always work for everyone—sometimes bad breath can last much longer than you could ever want. This is why your Indianapolis family dentists are here to help break down what’s really going on when you have bad breath.
According to the Academy of General Dentistry, up to 80 million people suffer from halitosis, no matter if they’re brushing and flossing their teeth every day. While that is an important part of taking care of your teeth, there are other valuable tips that we believe patients should follow in order to have a strong, healthy smile. Bad habits like poor oral hygiene (skipping brushing and flossing sessions, or not brushing and flossing for the proper amount of time), using harmful products like cigarettes and chewing tobacco, and a poor everyday diet can easily and quickly contribute to dealing with bad breath.
Halitosis can be difficult to get rid of because the bacteria that has built up in different areas of your mouth. From your teeth, your gum line and the far back of your tongue, bacteria can be sneaky and keep a dull, but prominent bad taste in your mouth if you don’t work to get rid of it all.
So what’s the right thing to do to get rid of chronic bad breath? Here are a couple of tips:
· Brush the far back of your tongue: if this isn’t an area that you usually brush in the morning and night, try to make it a point to clean every time—this is a common place where bacteria can hide!
· Buy a tongue scraper: if brushing the back of your tongue doesn’t work, try using a scraper or cleaner made for your tongue and reach back as far as you possibly can to get as much off as you possibly can
· Mouthwash made for bad breath: if you don’t usually use mouthwash, look into some brands and types that are specifically made to battle chronic bad breath. It can help kill and get rid of any lingering bacteria that you may have missed!
